A Winter Park high school student was arrested following a fight at Lake Howell High School. A 17 year old male student was arrested and charged with aggravated battery. According to witnesses, a male and female student were arguing. The argument escalated in to a physical fight. The Sheriff’s department reported that the male student pushed the female student to the ground causing her head to hit the concrete pavement. The female student was transported to the hospital by ambulance and treated for a head laceration.
Any type of school violence is unacceptable. Most schools have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to fighting and bullying. Schools should be addressing violence through educational programing and curriculum development. Schools should provided students with not only academic support, but also emotional support. School guidance counselors can be helpful to students who are dealing with bullying or other violent situations.
