In Leon County, Florida, detectives recently arrested Barbara J. Knight for charges related to the death of a 5 month old – Peyton Joshua. This child died on September 17, 2010. He was observed to be unresponsive and cold by day care works at Kids Club Day Care. While life saving techniques were attempted, the child died.
The subsequent autopsy revealed that the cause of death was blunt force trauma. The Florida Department of Children and Families conducted an investigation that ultimately concluded that the blunt force type injuries took place while the child was in the sole care and control of Ms. Knight. See Detectives Charge Day Care Worker with Infant’s Death.
Of course, Ms. Knight will be entitled to representation by a criminal defense attorney or the public defender’s office. It appears that the prosecution and defense of this case will hinge on the evidence obtained and observed during the autopsy of the child.
Day care centers should be safe havens for children. Day care providers and child care workers should use their best efforts to provide for the safety and well being of the children.
