In Jacksonville (Duval County), Florida, a disturbing case recently went to a criminal trial. Robert Cowan, age 48, from Jacksonville, Florida was found guilty of using a minor child to produce images of child pornography, 2 counts of possession of child pornography, and 3 counts of receiving child pornography. The distribution and possession of child pornography is far from a victimless crime. It is a shame that people continue to exploit children in such a heinous manner. In this case, the facts are particularly frightening in that Mr. Cowan previously worked as a guidance counselor at Fort Caroline Middle School. The very person responsible for watching over and guiding children was the same person who was convicted of these crimes involving the exploitation of children. Years ago, one would never imagine such a person to commit such crimes. Mr. Cowan does not represent the majority of the solid teachers and counselors in place for the Duval County School System; however, it does give one cause to wonder how many other teachers and counselor like Cowan may be in the school system who have not been caught.
