A Gainesville, Florida man was recently arrested for throwing a slice of pizza at his daughter. The Gainesville Sun newspaper reported this story. The Alachua County Sheriff’s office stated that the father and daughter had a verbal argument which escalated to the throwing of the pizza slice. The father was charged with third degree felony child abuse without great harm after his daughter called 911 following the incident.
This is a strange but interesting case. I suspect that years ago the arrest would not have taken place. Was the arrest warranted in light of the actions? The challenge with child abuse is where to draw the line between a crime and a family squabble. If the police are too lenient, child may be subject to more abuse. If the police are too strict, some may argue that hampers the parent’s ability to discipline their own children.
