Florida Dog Bites - Risks to Children - Statistics and Important Information for Parents

dog%20behind%20bars.jpg

In Florida, children are the unfortunate victims of dog bite incidents. Some dog bites involve the family dog, a neighbor's dog, a relative's dog, a friend's dog, a stranger's dog, business owned dog, government owned dog, or stray. Whoever owns the dog - the injuries resulting from a dog bite injury can be quite significant from both a physical and psychological standpoint for a child. The Florida Department of Health posted an interesting article about Dog Bites on its website. According to a study conducted by health professionals and a veterinarian, there are more than 4.7 million reports of dog bites a year and approximately 50 % of these incidents involve children. It is estimated that more than 500 residents from the State of Florida are bitten by a dog each year and suffer injuries significant enough to require a hospital visit or admission. Children under the age of 10 years old were noted to suffer a higher proportion of injuries to the head and neck as compared to older victims. The study also noted that a greater number of un-neutered males accounted for over 70 % of the dog bite incidents. This statistic supports the need and utility of having dog owners neuter their male dogs. For more information regarding this study - See Florida Department of Health - Dog Bite Information, Statistics, and Advice. See also Florida Dangerous Dog Laws - County by County, and Florida Leash Laws - County by County.

Hazing Incident Investigated at FAMU - Death of Robert Champion - Band Member

Fire%20Rescue%20Paramedic%20Red%20Emergency%20Vehicle.jpg

In Florida and other States, hazing related acts can be considered crimes punishable by fines and imprisonment. Hazing can lead to serious personal injuries and, in some instances, death. Unfortunately, for some teams and band programs at high schools and colleges, hazing is seen as a tradition or a rite of passage. There is certainly no justification or excuse whatsoever for hazing acts even if there is a tradition or history behind the acts. Florida A & M University is a college located in Tallahassee (Leon County) Florida. The Florida A & M Rattlers are well know for the Marching 100 Band Program. It is a great acomplishment to be selected to this band program and to be part of the magic of the band's performances. Recently, Robert Champion, age 26, became ill and died. Robert was a band major with the Florida A & M Band Program. The death of this band member may have been related to hazing related activities. See FAMU Band Leader Drummed Out in Wake of Hazing Related Incident.

The administrators and band directors and assistants at FAMU had a duty to supervise the program in a way that provided a safe environment for the band members. Hazing activities are often well known to current and past band members and their parents. It is also well known in many instances to the very officials and administrators running the program. Hazing is hazing. Some people may be inclined to refer to hazing as horse-play, fooling around, kids being kids, etc Again, it should be pointed out that hazing is hazing. Plain and Simple! This is especially true when children and college students are put at risks of humiliation, mental suffering, physical personal injuries, and, sadly, in some instances death.

Duval Schools Educate Students About Safe Dating

education%20school%20day%20care%20book%20with%20glasses%20and%20green%20apple.jpg

In Jacksonville, Florida and other cities in Florida, teens are at risks for serious personal injuries when they go out, are at parties, and, yes when they date. The Duval County School System is following a new State of Florida mandate that requires school districts to inform and educate teens about what is safe and healthy dating habits and relationships. Some critics of this State mandate state that it takes time and money away from other more basic academic tasks of a school system. Others believe that the education and information are vital to the safety of teens. Unfortunately, many Florida teens are victims of dating violence. While it is unrealistic to believe that all violence can be eliminated, education and information hopefully will result in the prevention or reduction of dating violence. The physical and / or emotional injuries from dating violence can last a lifetime. See Duval Schools Work to Educate Teens About Safe Dating.

The Jacksonville Jewish Community Alliance is a wonderful place that serves many individuals and families in the Jacksonville, Florida area. The Michele Block - Gan Yeladim (Hebrew for “Garden of Children”) has one of best programs in North Florida. From the age of 2 through Kindergarten, students are provided with a safe and nurturing educational environment. How do I know this? I know this because both of our children attended school at Gan Yeladim and truly benefited from everything the school and its wonderful staff had to offer. I remember when our son was enrolled in the school. Most nights, we would read a story or two to our son. I remember one night when he said, "Hey Dad, want me to read you a story?" I was left pleasantly surprised to find out that he could read. Before this wonderful discovery of mine, I guess he kept his reading abilities quiet for awhile but once he started to read to us - he never stopped. The JCA and its wonderful school brought this surprise to us . . . Teaching a child to read at such a young age is a gift that will be carried through for a lifetime. Now any time my son says, "Hey Dad, you want me to read you a story?" I gladly accept the offer. I am no longer surprised that he can read or how well he can read; however, I am still in awe with the JCA Gan Yeladim Pre-School / Kindergarten and everything it did for my son. For more information about the JCA - go to the Official Website for the Jacksonville Jewish Community Alliance.

My Jewish Community Alliance Story - The Building Blocks of a Great Education

Education%20Day%20Care%20Building%20Block%20F.jpg

The Jacksonville Jewish Community Alliance otherwise known as the JCA is a non-proft organization that provides pre-school and kindergarten education, after school care, sport leagues, summer camp activities, and many other programs for children. One of the core goals of the JCA is to provide a safe and clean learning environment for the children. The JCA Gan Yeladim Pre-School / Kindergarten provides the students with a solid academic and social education. My son graduated from the Kindergarten program at the JCA and then went on to public elementary school. While enrolled in this Gold Seal pre-school / kindergarten program, my son learned to read, learned to write, acquired leadership skills, and showed his creativity through art and other activities. The JCA helped my son foster friendships and taught my son how to get along with others. Since graducating from the JCA, my son has done well academically in all of his studies. He also has developed into a good person with admirable qualities. Recently, my son was playing soccer with a group of kids at a local soccer park. He noticed that some of the bigger kids were teasing and picking on one of the younger and much smaller boys. My son stepped up and defended the little boy by including him in the game. Once in the game, my son made sure the little boy was treated fairly and that the little boy was safe in the game. Yes, it is important to excel in academics, but it is also important to excel in the area of humanity. I strongly believe that the JCA played a vital role in the proper upbrining of my son. The JCA has touched the lives of many people beyond their members and graduates of the pre-school / kindergarten. For more information, see Jacksonville Jewish Community Alliance. The motto of the JCA certainly rings true - Where You Belong.

household%20keys%20on%20white%20background.jpg

In Florida and other States, child safety is key when transporting children. Whether the child is transported by a parent, babysitter, friend, neighbor, day care center, or school, it is important that safety measures are taken for each and every child being transported. This includes the proper selection and use of child booster seats. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ranked child car booster seats. For parents, schools, and day care centers, it is important to review this list and other reviews to determine which seats are recommended and proper for the children being transported. See Group Rates and Evaluates Child Booster Seats.

It can be quite stressful for a parent to deal with all of the challenges and difficulties of a child injury.
